PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: LEGENDARY SWEETWATER BUILDS COMMUNITY WITH LIVE MUSIC AND EDUCATION

If you ask a musician or music lover to name the most iconic venues in the Bay area, Sweetwater Music Hall will almost certainly be on every list. What started in 1972 as a humble, 90-seat “tavern with a stage” in Mill Valley turned into a beloved place where the biggest names in roots and rock music played, including Bob Weir, Aaron Neville, Big Mama Thornton, Carlos Santana, Elvis Costello, Etta James, Gregg Allman, Jerry Garcia, John Hiatt, John Lee Hooker, Van Morrison and many more.

After temporarily closing its doors in 2007, Sweetwater reopened in its current location in 2012. The pandemic shuttered the venue, but also gave Sweetwater an opportunity to reimagine its future. Sweetwater Music Hall, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization, was born. Devoted to “advancing education, understanding and appreciation of music, culture and arts through the presentation of a vibrant and diverse range of live performances,” Sweetwater operates a state-of-the-art performing arts music venue and supports music education programs for youth and adults.

“I can’t even tell you how many shows I’ve seen at Sweetwater,” said Jennifer Maxwell, JAMBAR founder and a drummer in two Bay area bands. “When this historic venue, which brings so much joy to our community, expanded into a nonprofit to advance music and education, I knew I wanted to champion its efforts.”

JAMBAR is on board as the presenting sponsor of the legendary twice-monthly Open Mic nights, which are hosted by Joe Endoso & Matt Jaffe. A number of notable performers, including Ben Harper and Train, have played Sweetwater’s Open Mic nights. The free events, which have a “two song/10-minute” format, give locals and visiting musicians alike an opportunity to showcase their talent. All ages and experience levels are welcome, with past performers ranging from seven to 90 years old.

Sweetwater’s Green Room is stocked with JAMBARs so performers can keep their energy up, and fans can purchase bars in the cafe.

“Jennifer and JAMBAR really understand the power of music and what a difference it can make in a community,” said Maria Hoppe, Executive Director of Sweetwater Music Hall. “We are so grateful to JAMBAR for helping us keep the 50+ year tradition of Open Mic Night alive and rockin’!”
